What Most Bloggers Forget — Your Blog Is Not Your Business.

So, let’s just say that you’ve got this blog with 100,000 views per month. You’ve got this email list of several thousand people. You’ve got quite a few articles that get responses like crazy.

But then, the question is: so what?

How is all that attention going to help you?

Most bloggers are quite good at writing great content and getting people to read their content. What they are often not so good at, however, is using all that traffic to get actual paying customers.

Here are just a few questions to ask yourself:

  1. Do you even know what you want your readers to do next once they’ve read all those articles of yours?
  2. Do you have a clear plan in place on how you are going to turn those readers into paying customers?
  3. Do you know what problem you are solving for your readers?
  4. Do you know who your target customers are?
  5. Do you have a viable solution to a specific problem, which your customers are willing to pay real money for?
  6. Do you have the capabilities in place to sell your product/service at a large scale?
  7. Do you you have the capabilities to drive real, measurable results for your customers?

If you answered no to several of these questions, then it’s going to be difficult for you to actually make money from your blog. In that case, you’ll have to make some serious changes.

But before that, let me explain a bit more.

What is a blog really?

Yeah, I know. A blog used to be an online diary, it’s published in chronological format and all that. But that’s not what I am talking about here. What I am interested in, is what a blog is from a business perspective.

Because that’s what many bloggers forget.

They forget that a blog is essentially just a marketing tool. One way of reaching their prospective clients. A tool that helps to generate a first interest in their product or service.

So, here’s the point:

Only because you have a plan for growing your blog, you still don’t have a a plan for building a profitable business.

Only because you have a blog that attracts readers, you don’t have a product that people are willing to pay money for.

Only because you have a whole lot of subscribers, you still don’t have a way that converts readers into paying customers.

Growing a business.

If you want to make money blogging, you will need to start treating your blog for what it is — one part of your business. Your blog might always remain the aspect of your business you spend most time on, but it is certainly not the single most important factor of your business.

The single most important factor about growing a business is that you get the fundamentals right.

And that means having a business model which is grounded in reality.

Here’s what I mean by that:

  • Have you identified a specific group of people who share a very specific problem?
  • Are these people truly looking for a solution to this problem and, if yes, are they willing to pay for it?
  • Do you have the capabilities to deliver some real, measurable results to your prospective customers?
  • Are you getting the numbers right? Can you sell enough of your product/service in order to make a profit?
  • Have you tested all of these assumptions? More specifically, do you have some paying customers?


There is a lot more to building a successful blogging business than just producing great content and attracting readers. Essentially, that is like a business that only has marketing capabilities, but nothing else.

So, think about what you can really do for your customers. More specifically, which measurable results you can achieve for them.

And then turn that into an awesome product or service that is truly grounded in the needs of your customers.

Learn to think like a true entrepreneur.

Not ‘just’ like a blogger.
