This Wednesday, the College Caucus sat down with Chris Perri to talk about the upstart campaign going on in Central Texas. Chris, one year removed from being a Young Democrat himself, was excited to talk to us about the issues that faced his district. Throughout the short conversation, Chris impressed us with his thorough understanding of not only issues, but also the ability to truly represent his district.

Chris represents one of the largest Public Universities in the nation in the University of Texas-Austin, as well as Tarleton State University at the north end of his district. The district is gerrymandered in the worst ways, it represents the central Austin area as well as the immediate area west of I-35 from the south end of the Fort Worth and Dallas area.

On Getting Money Out Of Politics

Chris, though being a great fundraiser himself, is adamantly against the corruption of politics in money. He sees this less as a Democratic issue, but more as an American issue, one that keeps many of the Americans most effected by Federal Policy unable to truly provide feedback and effect these policies. His Republican opponent, Roger Williams has already taken in a significant amount of corporate PAC money, including $1,500 from the NRA, just 13 days after the Parkland shooting. Our caucus believes that when it comes to policy, special and corporate interests are way over-represented, and we need to see more Congresspeople that truly are committed to representing American people.

On Getting Young People Engaged

Talking about his connections to the Young Democrats, he was very committed to getting young citizens engaged in the process and out during his campaign and after. Austin Young Democrats has already endorsed him and so has University Democrats at University of Texas. Young people represent a cornerstone of Chris’ campaign, and you can see all throughout his social media and his campaign presence in the district that he is ready to accurately represent our needs in Washington D.C.

On What can we do as Young Democrats?

Chris left us by asking us to help through helping him get the word out through social media about his campaign and if you’re in the area to stop by and help him through his direct outreach efforts. Millennials are the largest age demographic and one that hasn’t voted at the rates of our parent’s and grandparent’s generations, and so he ended by asking us to reach out to our peers and tell them how important 2018 is for our generation and the future of this country
