Best Thriller Novels by Indian Authors
The trend of writing good thrillers by Indians is on the rise for the last decade or so. However, most of the writers think or portray good story and plot but land up writing very predictable stories. But still, not all are same. Recently, I read some thriller novels of various genres and I feel that they are worth getting shared on a higher level for bigger audience reach.
Ten X Murders for the Mind by Amitav Ganguly:
It is a collection of 10 lengthy stories about murders and crimes which are solved by the inspector Samsher Brahma. It is a wonderful yet deeply layered book on murder mysteries. The author has carefully placed the stories, with uniqueness and freshness not overlapping.
It is one book that is totally based on logic and evidences over any random guesswork or euphoria of the detective. The stories sound engaging and surreal. One must read them in leisure or with their own pace to thoroughly enjoy the collection. Murders took place for all possible reasons that we see in movies, however, the most twisted stories are related to revenge, not greed.
The author has maintained a fixed kind of pattern for storytelling. He used sweeps and back stories very rarely. The stories chug ahead with amazing twists and turns, keeping the predictability at bay. In most of the stories, the crime takes place at the beginning. Thus, making ground for the Inspector Samsher Brahma. He is the lead character in all stories. All murders and crimes are solved by him and his team. A wonderful book on murder and crime mystery.
Faith and Beloved by Kochery C Shibu:
Undoubtedly, it’s an Amazon Bestseller! This novel perfectly epitomizes a crime thriller. The novel is laced with love, lust, redemption, war themes related to LTTE and ISI and much more. The sketching of characters with optimum back stories and incredible backdrop and sweeps is so superbly done that once readers get under the skin of the story, they find it entirely connected.
The story features some strong yet peculiar characters but it mainly shuttles between Alice Cherokil and Prem Rollands. They kill for justice and revenge and then on the run, but little did they know that they are bound to cross each other’s path in the most unexpected ways. Storytelling is really amazing because it intrigues readers, and the action and thrill throughout makes many on the edge of my seat.
Arya’s Hunting Ground by Arvind Narsima:
Published by BookMedia, Arvind Narsima’s Arya-based crime thriller novel, Arya’s Hunting Ground is an absolutely riveting book. This is one of the crime thrillers that are actually spine tingling. The atmosphere that’s built in every situation is completely shocking and yet engaging.
The story is very well-crafted, very cleverly written with unpredictable intelligent and shocking twists and surprises. It is completely unputdownable from the front cover to the back one. Including Arya, and other supporting and small characters are well sketched and defined according to their circumstances. As a reader, I identified with them closely and thus the story became very engaging for me, feeling their fear anxieties and motivations.
The last section of the book completely blew my mind. There was so much unfurling of events and realities of gaudy people. I love crime and murder mysteries that expose all one by one. When two gang wars and Arya were about to confront each other, I was thrilled by the chase, thrill, high-rush drama, and the fear factor was all so brilliantly done that I was so invested in it as if it was me who was standing beside them.
Definitely a must read for devoted fans of twisted and riveting thrillers. It is one of the best thrillers that I read in recent times. The novel puts special attention on rapists — the way Arya hunts them and screws is worth noting. I hoped all police of our country be like him to some extent. The novel stretches over 400 pages but I didn’t feel the heat as I was much engrossed in it and loved the detailing of crime and its allied things. Powerful narration — a tightly action-packed novel of high relevance.
Based on Lies — The Whole Story by Debarshi Kanjilal:
A psychological thriller novella set against the sublime backdrop of Kolkata, with contemporary timeline. It starts with a diary of the lead character Anurag Sanyal. His diary makes the first part of the book. The next part is not diary but investigation by a doctor about all the stuff that is being written in the diary by mentally ill Anurag.
The story is about many things like insecurity in life, lovelorn life, craving for sins, a hidden lunacy. The novella is indeed dark and one will have a tough time getting recoiled with the overall story. Are dark psychological thrillers like this only? A good read overall. I think to have some brain exercise, you must try this.
Abhinash Chakraborty by Souvik Roy:
As the title suggests Abhinash Chakraborty is at the center. He is a CBI officer and in disguise making his way to burst nation’s biggest security threat. Well, even other auxiliary characters (Rudolph, Alicia, Afroz) too act as a strong catalyst to the overall plot. The story starts with a simple-looking murder case, but deep inside the belly of the story lies some other interesting climaxes. It’s a kind of book that is anti-thesis to predictability and it lets readers to interpret, this makes this book a near-perfect classic suspense thriller.
The Good, the Bad and the Unknown by Raj Tilak Roushan:
The book does not hover around some imaginary James bond type characters. The author a serving IPS officer has tried his level best to bring crime stories from hinterland based on his personal experiences as a Police officer which we living in cities rarely get to know. One can easily relate to various characters mentioned in the stories.
KANSA by Prassant Kevin:
KANSA is a book 1 in the Killer Trilogy. It marks the debut of Professor Black who is Nation’s best criminologist and a detective. This is the first book in the trilogy. A murder that has killed 40 pregnant women makes a comeback after 5 years. To stop him, Professor Black races against the time. It is an amazing novel with measured pace and controlled events.
Bhoot Bhavish Bartaman by Mehool Parekh:
Bhoot Bhavish Bartaman is a debut work of Mehool Parekh. The novel features Major Bartaman Bhowmick, an army personal based in Pune. The novel opens up with a brutal murder of Rupali — she was found dead in her apartment. What could be the reason behind her murder as she was happy in her marriage life? The intriguing storyline of the novel draws the attention of the readers that must have kept them awake for many nights so that they too could solve the mystery along with the duo.
