Subhash Kumar is a regular author of Hindi books. His latest novel Katil Nurse is a Hindi romantic thriller. The book went into some buzz for its take on romance and love affair and marriage in reality. Although the book’s story sounds like a scripted Bollywood movie but it is more or less a work of fiction that tries to depict the true nature of today’s youth that is unable to support itself when fails in love.

Other than job and marriage, it is evident that the youth of our country is also grappled with love or say infatuation. Well, this novel takes a dig at the love affair of the narrator Subhash and Nandu.

To keep controversies at bay, the author showed two fictional different states and places of the boy and the girl. The boy works in some different state while the girl is a private nurse in her native state. Cities are different for both. Post one accident, the girl Nandu finds the identity of the boy similar to her marriage search proposition. Thus, she initiates conversation with him through the phone and later on they meet from time and again. Much of the novel goes like this — they chatting on messages and exploring their values in the marriage. A lot can be understood about marriage proposals and tenacity of our society.

Soon, their affair reaches home of both. In fact the girl was afraid of losing the narrator if his family doesn’t seek her hand on time. The coverage of both families was kept blurry to make the story of both lovers stand out.

In India marriage is a big thing or say mainstream event. The boy completely surrenders himself at the mercy of the girl. She steers and guides him in the relationship. The boy also gets to know about her past relationship with a guy called Ajay and other maneuvering cases but it’s too late by now. He is blind in her love. Now what?

On the other hand, the girl Nandu is being introduced to the family of the boy, especially with his mother. There is a lot of talking in the novel, one needs to be attentive while reading the book to decipher the undertone of ladies.

All looks good and in tandem. Then Covid strikes, the boy is worried about her health but she works as a Covid warrior. After mid way, the boy manages to place the girl on a good government hospital through his contacts. She is secured with her job. But at this moment, the girl changes. At this point of time, the author really painted the cunning behavior of girl. She begins changing. Love doesn’t stay, the way it begins. They both go intimate too but that doesn’t matter for the girl anymore.

Another aspect of the novel is mental state of the broken heart. The guy breaks down like anything. He goes crazy for her. Reason is clear, it was his male manhood or ego that got hurt. He still chases her but to no avail. The love that looked unfazed and intact initially between them is now more fragile than glass. Why? Love changes with time and circumstances. As soon as the girl gets her share of good days, she changes forever. She grows so adamant and selfish that at one point of time she plans to kill the guy medically. On the other hand, you will feel that the guy couldn’t take the heart break. He was devastated but eventually came out after that death trap.

Katil Nurse by Subhash Kumar is an apt title. In its right balance, the novel captures the one-sided love affair that was bound to change after some time.
