In the last two decades Indian literature has gone through a lot of experimentation. Some worked, while a few succeeded at an average level. In a sense, it was good, as earlier people were stuck with novels that galloped around society or wars or vapid romance tales. The realms of fantasy and mythology seemed untouched and authors reckoned that genre as time-consuming and ineffective. However, when in 2010, The Immortals of Meluha hit the bookshelves, readers could not understand what to leave or what to pick. Be it anything, they loved this experimentation of Amish; as a result, he became a literature superstar overnight in India. In the wake of his success many authors pick up penning down mythological fiction related to epic saga like Mahabharata and Ramayana. The mix of fantasy and facts and imagination is proving a new and exciting reading experience for the readers.

In this post, we are going to talk about top 5 rising authors that have good grasp over mythological genre other than Amish and Devdutt Pattanaik, but they still seek a wider scope of recognition. Let’s see the faces and their work that needs much applaud.

  1. Mithilesh Kumar:

He is the author of Supercop of Aryavrat. That’s his first novel, but it doesn’t look like, because the kind of information and otherworldly facts he has put in the novel made him look like as he has been a veteran of Indian Mythology. By profession, he was employed in the Indian government, and holds fabulous academic degrees from across the world. He is an erudite with great penchant for mythological details and brilliance. The novel Supercop of Aryavrat is based on Krishna’s life.

2. Manini J. Anandani:

She has authored Mandodari — the book retells the Ramayana from Sri Lankan side. The book received good response from the mythological lovers. She hails from a family where discussion on literature, history and mythology with morning tea is a commonplace. As a result, she got an inclination towards mythology fiction. Fascinated by books and stories, she used to narrate a lot of mythology related stories to her friends and colleagues. So coming up with a novel like Mandodari was inevitable.

3. Kavita Kané:

She is known for writing mythology fiction novels. All of her books are based on Indian mythology. Her bestselling novel is Karna’s Wife: the Outcast Queen. She is seen as a poignant author of retelling, especially mythological fiction.

4. Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni:

She is a brilliant writer of this genre and her books are often in the bestseller list, however, she is not that awarded or highlighted among Indian readers. Some of her great books are The Palace of Illusions and The Forest of Enchantments. Though she has written over 10 novels related to mythological fiction, surprisingly yet to see that rockstar limelight.

5. Anuja Chandramouli:

She is a bestselling Indian author. Arjuna: Saga of a Pandava Warrior-Prince was her highly acclaimed debut novel, and it was named by Amazon India as one of the top 5 books in the Indian Writing category for the year 2013. Kamadeva: The God of Desire, and Shakti: The Divine Feminine are her other bestsellers.
