Medium’s a funny place. Some writers here get so angry when no one reads their stuff after they spent hours writing a single piece. They blame the platform. They blame the ‘quality’ of the readership. They blame everything but their writing…

I’ve been writing on Medium since 2018 and during that time I’ve learned a couple things about what works and what doesn’t.

After publishing 1,685 stories here, I’ve learned a few things I’d like to share with you. Whether you’re just getting started on Medium, or you’ve been here awhile and you want more traction, I might be able to help.

Here are 27 things you can do (or avoid) to make your Mediums work harder for you:

  1. Write content people want to read — Research the stories that work. Look at your stats. Write more of the stories that stick.
  2. Stop writing content only you want to write — Again, refer to number one. The reader is the only person who matters on Medium. If you want people to read your stuff you’ve got to stop writing stuff they don’t want to read.
