On The Shortness of Life and The Importance of Living With Purpose
The creator’s guide to doing your best work daily
Today I have to attend a funeral for a friend of mine. He was a mentor and teacher. He lived a full life and was a great example of character and integrity to everyone he touched. He was also flawed like the rest of us.
I hate funerals. Although I’ve never met anyone who loves them.
Something happens to me every time I sit and stare at another coffin. I question my own life. I flip through the mental calendar, taking stock of what I’ve done in my life, what I haven’t done, and what I’m yet to do.
It scares me to think I could be gone tomorrow.
Sometimes I try to practice the stoic virtue of preparing for the worst, but I never do that for my own mortality. I guess you can’t really react to your own death. Not here, anyway.
But this whole funeral business got me thinking about the importance of a daily practice.
When we do our best work every day (even if we’ve got a day job mucking up the works in the middle), we can rest knowing we’ve done all we can to live as full as we can.
We’ve all been given this gift — another wake-up.
