Medium is a tough landscape. When a new writer joins the platform is can be demotivating for a long time before you finally see a little traction in readership. With the new changes in the partner program, the spoils of your writing can take even longer.

But it’s not all gloom and doom.

In fact, Medium is still a great place to write and post your content. Medium did all the heavy-lifting for you. They paid millions of dollars to bring all these like-minded readers together. And you can target them with tags to try and get your writing noticed.

However, it’s not enough to just write a Medium story and hope people will find it. You can waste a lot of precious writing time hoping to earn money only from your Medium traffic.

Instead, there’s a better, more-lucrative alternative.

At the bottom of every story you write, invite your readers to join your email list. Not your Medium email list, but a list you own and control. A reader on your email list is worth thousands more than the couple pennies per read you’ll earn on Medium.
