Gary Halbert is one of the most-famous and most-successful copywriters who ever lived. In his prime, Gary ran a mail-order business where he sent a single letter for more than 30 years, 600,000,000 times, for an offer to buy a family crest, using nothing but targeted names in the phone book.

This was mail-order.

The internet didn’t exist.

The direct mail letter was so successful, at it’s peak, Gary employed an army of people whose sole job was to open envelopes and deposit the hand-written checks. His bank actually gave him the second floor of the facility to house all these assistants, clawing through millions of dollars in purchases.

Gary knew what he was doing.

Now, he wasn’t always the most-ethical of marketers. He earned plenty of cease and desist orders from the US Postal service, based on misleading claims in the letter. But, despite his imperfections, Gary was a genius of attention-getting.

He used a simple method of designing his sales letters that hook, engage, and encourage readers to take action.
