Writing, as a vocation, is both a gift and a curse. Here is one of the few jobs where you have the opportunity to perform alchemy — nothing into something. Words into gold.

The curse part, though, is that no one will ever read what you write unless you actively build an audience for your work. There’s no such thing as ‘the work speaks for itself.’

How could your writing speak for itself if no one knows it exists?

So, if we want to earn more from our writing it means we need to get said writing in front of more people willing to read it. To get more people to read your writing you need to go to the place your readers spend their time.

You seek them first, wave your hands in a wild gesture, and convince them to come over to your island and play. Translation: Give your readers a reason to join your email list.

You need a direct connection, a bat phone, into the the world of the people you serve. Your favorite social platform is not your list. Someone else’s email newsletter platform is not your list.

If everyone is doing it and the thing they are doing is easy and quick, it’s also unlikely the place for your list.
