Design Tips to Make Your Hotel Look Awesome

Sometimes it’s hard to set some time aside from your busy schedule to sit down and think about redesigning, or even just tweaking, the look of your hotel rooms.

But there are a few simple things you can do to update the style of your rooms to make your guests feel more comfortable, more relaxed, and like they’re getting their money’s worth.

Think About Your Lobby

Your lobby is the first thing your guests see when they enter your hotel, so this is the most natural place to start!

The modern traveller expects more from hotel lobbies. No longer is your lobby just a place for guests to check in and out, it’s now expected to be everything — common room, chill out space, work area.

To cater to these needs, think about adding more functionality: power points for laptop and phone chargers, comfortable furniture, space for socialisation and easy access to amenities — think free wifi, toilets, maybe a shop for travel items.

Making your guests feel welcome by providing them with a relaxing, comfortable and functional lobby area will encourage them to come back

Observe Trends

Think about what trends are currently in. We’re not saying you have to abide by these trends — you don’t want to look exactly like the hotel down the road — but they’re certainly worth taking into account, even if you decide to go totally rogue and buck these trends (it’s good to get an idea of what you don’t want to do!).

As we mentioned before, the increased use of technology raises expectations when it comes to power points. Consider whether you have enough places for guests to charge their various mobile devices. Think about upgrading your ancient TV’s to smart ones (if you haven’t already).

And you know what else is huge at the moment? Everything eco-friendly. Adding sustainable features like energy efficient light sources and hotel furniture made out of eco-friendly materials (think bamboo) shows your guests you care about the world we live in and that you’re doing something to make a difference.

Create Space

As you’re probably already aware, using mirrors helps create space. The bigger the mirror, the more spacious a room feels.

While mirrored furniture like dressers and side tables are becoming much more popular they don’t necessarily suit every room, but there are plenty of other tricks you can use to make your rooms feel more spacious than they are.

  • Try using high-limbed furniture. The more space you can see under and around a table, dresser or bed, the less space it seems to take up.
  • Pull furniture away from the walls to create the illusion of spaciousness.
  • Leaving your windows uncovered gives a room more depth (and showcases a beautiful view if you have one).
  • Use a lot of glass items. These take up less visual space and make a room look less crowded.

Accessorize Wisely

Accessories are a great way of getting that high-end, collected-over-time look of a boutique hotel. When choosing your hotel room accessories, try and select items that bring at least three textures into the room: one soft and plush, one sleek smooth and one natural, like wood.

Knitted throws — particularly in chunky textures like cable — and serving trays that catch the light are two popular accessories that bring some variety into the room.

But don’t go crazy with accessories if you’re trying to create space: too many items will simply clutter the room, making it feel smaller and suffocating.

Hotel design doesn’t need to be expensive, especially if you just want to add a little touch of something extra to give your rooms a little more personality. Try these tips to see if you can improve your customer’s’ experience.
