I wrote this poem in trade for a tarot reading at a small Renaissance Festival put on by the Society for Creative Anachronism at the University of Houston in 1989.

John Lane Lomas (c.1816–1894) — Wolverhampton Art Gallery

Aye, and the Tarot Woman
Doth utter truth,
Upon her lips words dance
Like unto song, and
She leads me,
As a mother leads a child,
Mildly pointing a way.

Won’t you come, my brother,
Come into the place of
the woman who sees?
Come with me and read
The way of our love.

Come, Sir Knight, and see
Shall there be a vision
Of thy death?
Or damsels distressed,
Dire needing the strength
Of thy lance?

In the stars may be
The wisdom of God
And in the palm a plan
But for the truth
Of mine heart,
I seek the Tarot Woman
