I burned again
to ashes
flame extinguishing
itself

Unable to breathe
the words into
the world

Smoke inhalation
— air pollution,
pulling at my brain

(And I know it will be worse
if I don’t write
And I know it will be worse
if I don’t write
And I know it will be worse
if I don’t write
)

This fire in me
needs a
controlled burn

This flame in me needs
the page
the words
the turn of the world
as it dances beneath
my fingertips
keyboard
pen
fabric of life

Great-great-grand-father
was a fire-man,
but not the kind
you’re thinking of —
a shed of dynamite
he had
