Missing Sailing

Thoughts About My Circumnavigation After 5 Years

It’s been five years since I tasted salt in the air
Five years since I’ve wiggled my toes on sandy beaches
Five years since I’ve experienced the push of the wind
Blowing against my sails

Longing for travel and ocean breezes
Checking into a new country after a two-week passage
Doing a night shift with a cool wind coming over the port side
Pushing and pulling the boat, along the way

Memories of sailing across the Indian Ocean
Trying to sleep in the forward berth
The boat rocking like a bucking bronco
You can learn to sleep in almost any condition
Sailing on the open sea

The only thing that causes lost sleep
While sailing around the tropics
Is when there is no breeze
Heat sticking to your sweat-drenched body
Like fiberglass resin, with no relief in site

But I would put up with all of that again
To be back on the open sea
Chart-plotter set towards the next destination
Autopilot keeping…
