First day of work.
Late.
You are subjected.
To abuse. To hardship. To hate.

At first, you are barely noticed.
You navigate with tact.
You stumble, stutter, in fear of the blacklist.
Worst is to offend the man atop.
The man who rules with an iron fist.

Slowly but surely,
You show your true mettle.
The fangs of temptation grow larger.
More than ever, you no longer want to settle.

You get a chance.
You showcase your spirit.
Your merit goes noticed.
You expect a bonus.

Instead, Your performance becomes the new bar.
“My promotion, Boss?!”
“No, John, not yet.”
“I know you can do more.”
