Survivor’s Guilt

Man Versus Memory

Trickling out of me drop-by-drop
Thoughts that cannot be stopped

Memories to keep
Memories to uphold

Memories to hide
Memories to dispose

Distracting me by day
Distressing me at night

Walking me back
Exposing my fright

Our conscious, the guiding lights
Our goods, our bads, and our not-so-brights

An implicit creed to always heed and never need
A sigh of relief.

Keeping me from being free
Keeping me from being me

Your legacy, my ball-and-chain
Your legacy, retold with strain

Memories, these binding covenants
Survivors of a life that once belonged–to us.
