Why Do We Remember Wrongs More Easily Than Joys?

a poem

I noticed
during my recounting
how easily
I remember the wrongs

despite actively
trying to foster the good,
the joyous.

I thank you for
checking in,
for asking before venting,
for sharing your deepest joys,
and feeling comfortable
for me to hold your deepest sorrows;
for fostering and sharing my joy,
and for holding space for my deepest sorrows.

It has helped me grow,
to learn what’s important to me
from the positive, for what I want,
given a good example,
instead of floundering and trying to think
what I don’t need, trying to get rid of it,
trying to distance myself.

In body and in spirit,
I have blossomed
for the reason
one isn’t fighting off
but rather fighting for.
