Writing is the challenge
— putting the words together
in the hopes of making something better;
catch a dream in a jar of ink,
the old kind you’d dip the pen or quill in
— back then in the back when,
before ballpoints and screens

Writing is the challenge
to keep writing when
this callous world hits so hard;
and you never seem to ‘make it,’
and it feels so hard to fake it,
cos you thought that you
could break it
— break the code to find the
meaning
in this cold expanse,
the vast dread of no man’s land,
circa nineteen sixteen,
lining the words up,
neat as soldiers on parade
— what’s your general’s heart
made out of art
today?
