The Pursuit Of Greatness
Everybody wants to be successful. You’re constantly reminded of that fact. It’s often difficult to separate yourself from the desire to chase success in its many forms. Social media is crammed with regular people that want to become something more. The internet space is saturated with success gurus that want more than just your time — they demand your attention.
Then there is you. A little fish in the unwelcoming sea. You want to be successful too, right? The problem is, who are you really? What do you have to offer that separates you from the crowd?
You lack the many metrics that define our modern definition of success. You’re not a clear expert with top credentials and years of experience. On top of that, you lack the massive following or the platform. Plus, you’re just a decent person making a decent living. It would certainly be nice to brag about your incredible conversion rates or how much money you made in just one month.
You’re just another voice in a sea of voices…and guess what?
That’s a good thing.
Whether your voice draws in 1 or 1,000 people, your voice has power. Everyone has to start somewhere and it’s perfectly ok to start at ground zero.
Self-promotion is all about pushing yourself to the world image. You have to make yourself known and give the people the chance to get to know you. In getting to know you, they’ll want to know more.
You may not be a runaway success story…but you have a different set of credentials.
Your story, your journey, your drive. Everybody has a unique voice and that is where your success lies. It’s no secret that artists steal from each other. If you search throughout history, you will find many examples of artists stealing ideas from one another. However, it’s what you add to the original that makes it unique.
Your approach to life will always be different and unique from everyone else. Use that to your advantage to help build yourself up.
Life is Inspirational — Including Your Own
You may not be anyone special. I’m certainly not. My life is filled with failures and personal wins. I have overcome many intense challenges and I have experienced crushing lows. Allow your life to be your marketing credentials. Every human being on this planet has a unique story, and you are no different.
Don’t allow imposter syndrome to slow you down. Yeah, you don’t have a legion of followers that will worship your art until the end. And yes, you aren’t making thousands of dollars and haven’t earned the glorious self-validation that comes with it. It doesn’t matter. Give yourself permission to try and succeed instead of failing without ever starting.
Once you have that permission, you may wonder where to start.
Self-promotion means putting yourself out there to the world. Your name becomes the brand. Your art becomes the product. Whether it’s on social media, YouTube, or somewhere in between, go for it. Nothing will happen until you make it happen.
Remember that everyone that has achieved success had to start somewhere. The people you idolize now were once regular people with a dream. Guess what? They are still regular people with dreams. The only difference between you and them is the will to pursue those dreams.
People will sympathize with you more because you’re authentic. It’s not about creating this perfect, artistic lifestyle, but showing up every day and staying true to yourself.
When I say authentic, I’m not referring to the fancy buzzword everyone keeps throwing around as a marketing ploy to become the next great media influencer. If that’s what you’re looking for, just start an Instagram account.
I’m talking about someone that’s real. Upfront. Someone that seems just like you…and actually means it.
People will look up to you because of your values. If you write true, thoughtful art that speaks to others, the right people come. Don’t take the easy way out and compromise on what makes you great. People will take notice, and nobody likes a disingenuous person.
Your story can take many forms. It could be your personal life, achievements, and fears. It could be the happiest of times and the dreadfully devastating of times.
Everybody is inspired by someone, even if you don’t realize it. Just because you’re not a glowing symbol of success doesn’t mean you can’t inspire those around you.
Promote yourself and add your voice to this world. Chase those dreams.
