A Few Announcements

We here at The Bridge are proud of the community of writers we’ve helped gather over the last few years, but sometimes focusing on the publication pushes our editorial team into the background…and rightly so. We are a writer-focused team, after all.

That said, this writing community includes our editorial team, who are themselves writers and artists in the national security sphere. This week a couple of our editors published some great material…and we added a great new member to our editorial team…so we’d like to take a second to highlight these events:

First, editor Ty Mayfield published a wonderful photo essay over at The Diplomat. If you’ve never been to Kabul, these iconic photos and their stories will bring you up to speed on some aspects of this intriguing, and troubled, city:

“Kabul: A Different View” by Ty Mayfield

The rhythmic toss of a long whip sends a flock of pigeons spooling into winter’s grey light over the Old City of Kabul, where mud and brick houses climb the mountainside. Many Kabulis keep pigeons. When I asked one why he simply replied “They keep pigeons because they bring them joy.”|Image Credit: Tyrell Mayfield

Next, editor Nathan Finney waxed poetical on some of the less-referenced uses of land power. In his estimation, the use and presence of land forces can be used for far more than simply forcing a decision on an adversary or compelling them through “decisive” military combat. Land forces can be critical for deterrence, assurance, and coercion:

Finally, we’d like to introduce our newest editor, Eric Murphy. “Merf” has a history of studying English Literature, but he also has a Doctorate in Mathematics…we couldn’t have picked a better guy to balance out the team:
