The Bridge Week in Review

October 19–25, 2015

Greetings Bridge Reader,

Here’s who you might have missed this week on The Bridge…

The #MondayMusings of Diane Maye.

“Sun Tzu’s, The Art of War is such an excellent piece — succinct and timeless. I also love The 48 Laws of Power. I think this should be in every Strategy 101 course. Another great book is Peter Schwartz’s, The Art of the Long View — it helps you think of everything in terms of ‘scenarios,’ which is helpful for any strategy-oriented person.”

TSB Editor, Ty Mayfield’s In Search of Strategy — In Search of Ourselves

“[It] is important to recognize that strategies can only be evaluated against other strategies within the given context, not against some ideal. A strategy to achieve the unachievable isn’t a strategy; it’s a dream, and a strategy to reach an ambiguous political objective is a path so broad that one might wander lost in the desert for decades.”

Dave Mattingly’s review of Base Nation with Does Overseas Basing Make Sense for Today’s Military?

“The United States military maintains hundreds of bases overseas (with 170 golf courses) that range from mega bases which Vine calls ‘Little Americas’ to small shared use facilities which he calls ‘Lily Pads’ and were described in 2001 by a former defense department official as having ‘no flag, no forward presence, no family.’ To avoid semantics Vine defines ‘bases as any place, facility, or installation used regularly for military purposes of any kind.’”

Jason Howk introduces a speech from Sir Graeme Lamb titled, In Command and Out of Control

“I would suggest reading this speech in a Scottish accent and occasionally (by that, I mean a lot) inserting a colourful word or phrase to give it some Lambo flavor — especially the last word. Also a glass or two of scotch can help bridge the Queen’s English to American English language divide — even better if its scotch that you convinced someone else to buy for you.”

This coming week on The Bridge we are pleased to feature musings from Greg Daddis, and articles from David Dixon, Holly Hughson, and Dave Blair.

Thanks for reading and writing!
