Welcome to The Bridge
Writing Guidelines
Thank you for your interest in becoming a contributor for The Bridge. We have a strong editorial team and are dedicated to helping you find your voice and contribute to the discussion in a meaningful way. Once published on The Bridge, your story will be read by many others in the policy, national security, and military affairs area. We’re dedicated to making sure each and every post is widely read.
We’ve found that articles in the 900–1600 word range are best, but if you need a bit more room to round out your argument, please do not feel constrained. We will publish tightly written, well argued pieces between 500–5000 words. Given our broad national security-focused readership, we ask that your submissions be free of service-specific jargon, acronyms, and idiosyncratic style. Many of our writers are service members or veterans, and we value that as it makes us unique. But we ask that your articles are written for a general audience rather than a service-specific one.
We would prefer that you submit your post via Medium. If you have a Twitter account, you have a Medium account. Just go to www.medium.com and sign in using your Twitter or Facebook account. Once you’ve signed in, drop us a note and we’ll add you as a writer. Also “Follow” The Bridge as a collection, this will give you the option to submit to us later. Then click your profile picture at the top right hand corner, select “new story,” and start writing. As another option, you can, of course, craft it in Word, and copy-paste it in — this method works best if you have citations; they can be pasted seamlessly. When you’re ready to submit it for review, select the “Add to Collection” button at the top left corner, then select “The Bridge.” Your draft will come to us for review at that point (please do NOT publish your article before submission — we will handle that part for you). Apologies if this is pedantic, just wanted to make sure there are instructions for everyone. It’s all quite intuitive actually.
You only have to set this up once. Then writing for us becomes incredibly easy. Included below are some links that may help you work through some commonly asked questions. If you cannot submit though Medium, we will accept your post in a word document or email form.
We look forward to your post and thank you again for your time and effort. Please let us know if you have any questions at all!
Best,
The Bridge Team
