Challah — a round or spiral-shaped bread — has significant meaning for the Jewish community, especially during Rosh Hashanah (the Jewish new year), which will be observed next week. The spirals in the bread signify the crowns of God’s kinship as well as the cycle of the year. The circular shape, because it seemingly has no end, also symbolizes a long life.

These pictures show Mendy’s, a Kosher restaurant in the neighborhood, awaiting guests with challah ten days before Rosh Hashanah. The restaurant is in Crown Heights, home to the largest Hasidic community in America.
