2 Chainz is one of those rappers that needs no press. And, you know, the reality is he’s carved out a lane of his own. But we’ll get to that. Let’s look at these acts real quick.
The year is 1999. Rappers Tity Boi and Dolla Boy form the group Playaz Circle and in the spirit of the times, release an independent record, United We Stand, United We Fall. Masta P had lead the charge with independence followed by Cash Money so, hey, why not. Unfortunately, the album title was prophetic. United they fell. Tity was shot. Dolla was arrested.
It is now 2007. Ludacris knowing the fate of the Circle, signs the group to Disturbing The Peace. Tity Boi shows up on various DTP cuts. But the biggest buzz comes when Playaz Circle drop “Duffle Bag Boy.” Why? Lil Wayne was on that joint and Weezy was on a serious run. Tity Boi decided, “you know what, I’m going for mine.” But first, a name change.
Tity Boi is now rechristened 2 Chainz. In order to go solo in the fashion that he wanted, he had to buy his way out of that DTP contract. Which he did. And then…then 2 Chainz went on a tear…recording twenty one projects over the past seventeen years. Wikipedia (yeah, I know) credits 2 Chainz with sixty seven features…but I know, and you know that it is far more than that.
We know that Tit’s carved out a great niche for himself and that he exists in a lane of his own making. We know that, while 2 Chainz has had a career that’s almost spanned two decades, he exists in a place where no one even thinks about his age — 2 Chainz is timeless.
We know that 2 Chainz is going to keep putting out project after project and commanding large sums for his features. The greatest thing that he’s done is bet on himself (and support Minister Farrakhan…but that’s another story for another forum). We also know that you can’t read, “2 Chainz” without saying it in the same manner as him. That’s a helluva lane.
