Crown Heights, Brooklyn. Labor Day Weekend. The party really starts on Friday. Flags adorn every part of the car that can hold it. Anguilla, St Maarten, St Barthes, Barbados are some of the flags you’ll see — bookended by the ones you’ll see the most: Jamaica and Trinidad & Tobago.

But you’re going to hear Soca & Calypso WAY more than you’re going to hear Dancehall & Reggae. For us Black folks who got off the boat later, it may be the only time we hear Soca.

Which is why some of us are just now hearing about Young Devyn. You might know her from The BET Cypher (sic) from back in 2019. Or maybe you caught her from “Straight to It” that Brooklyn Drill jawn that clocks in a little under two minutes.

But Devyn’s been around for a decade. Seems odd, since she’s still young. It’s just that the Brooklyn rapper is a classic example of an entertainer — Devyn’s been getting attention since she was double digits. Here’s a description of her at eleven:
