To cop or crop an eyeful?

The “evil-eye” is a curse cast by someone with an envious glare, usually given to a person when they are unaware. Many cultures around the world, including South Asia, believe that receiving the evil eye will cause misfortune or injury.

Usually, farmers would use big, ugly and scary demon dolls to ward off the evil-eye. But according to The Hindustan Times farmer A. Chenchu Reddy has applied a little rural innovation to come up with something new: a poster of popular Canadian-Indian pornstar-turned Bollywood actress Sunny Leone smiling in a bright red bikini.

The poster has a line written in Telugu: ‘Orey, nannu chusi edavakura (Hey, don’t cry or feel jealous of me)!’ (HT Photo)

When asked about why he did it, 45 year old Andhra Pradesh farmer A. Chenchu Reddy said after years of disappointing yields, he didn’t want his crop of cauliflower & cabbage to succumb to the evil-eye anymore.

“This year, I have a good crop on 10 acres. This has been attracting unnecessary attention of villagers and passersby. To ward off their evil eye, I thought of this idea of putting up the big flax poster of Sunny Leone.” — A. Chenchu Reddy

The trick seems to be working because now nobody is looking at his crop and everybody (including the world) are looking at his poster of Sunny Leone. He believes his crops are looking healthier than ever.

Creative or Indecent?

Reactions online have been mixed, with many applauding the farmer’s creativity and others calling it indecent.

Copping an eyeful is worth it, if it means A. Chenchu Reddy crops an eyeful for himself. If we were Sunny Leone, we would be honored that she was chosen over the many other beautiful people in Bollywood. However, we would like to see farmers try other actresses, and even actors too. A smiling & topless Hrithik Roshan anyone?
