Stereotypes are widely held beliefs by many people about a person. For example, there are stereotypes about black men being gun-toting drug dealers. Brown women getting an arranged marriage when they’re 18. And white people not being able to dance, unless they pop a pill. As you can see, these are silly because they’re not actually true.

A common stereotype for people of colour is unattractiveness. There’s a beauty standard within our society where have to be white to be attractive. Anything else is token, exotic or unattractive. This makes people of colour feel like “outsiders” in Western society. It’s a misconception, because there are attractive and unattractive people in all races. White people included.

It’s true that people are more than just their appearances. You can have a beautiful personality, and not be physically attractive. Look at your own family & friends for an example. So when dispelling negative stereotypes, we agree that it’s important to be gentle, humble, and polite. Like Shahid Kapoor.

“I believe sexy is not only to do with the physical, but as much to do with the mental perspective on life.” — Shahid Kapoor

However, in order to truly combat negative stereotypes, we have to be direct. Like the hundreds of young South Asians that took to twitter to take pride in their appearance, stick it up to haters and prove people wrong. They did this by posting selfies of their most glamorous (some unglamorous) selves.

Trending moments when the collective group comes together are useful for modern society because it shows people that there is unique, diverse and international beauty, not just one specific & ideal definition of beauty.

What was the result? A plethora of FINE young people from all over South Asia blessing us with their beauty. People that are thankful for good health, good skin, good makeup and good parents having sex at just the right time.

When scrolling through the photos, there was a sense of pride, adoration and belonging for our fellow South Asians. We felt like an “insider” because people of all backgrounds were agreeing that Indians, Pakistanis, Sri Lankans and Bangladeshis were beautiful.

We’ve combed through the hashtag on twitter to save you hours of creeping for your future partner (or getting blocked) and curated the individuals with the highest amount of likes & retweets. Feel free to jump onto twitter and check out the rest of the tweets, as well as posting your own selfies!
