Why I started the Bucket Project
by Bucket founder Steve Stark
The Bucket Project is a leadership programme that provides space for reflection and exploring difficult problems, for creating options and making choices, or simply connecting with yourself and fellow adventurers. It’s a journey into wilderness, into an unknown future.
This is why I started it, says founder Steve Stark.
So one thing was the mountains. The way peace seems to settle on you there.
Another thing was nostalgia for student days. We’d spend a lot of time crying with laughter. Laughing so hard it hurt.
What happened to that?
And then the constant busyness. The feeling that every minute was counted for. And always for other people.
Then I bumped into Jack Hubbard in one of those weird moments of synchronicity and coincidence. I always think you need to go with those.
Jack is one of those people whose sense of possibility inspires confidence and optimism. When he told me he and his family had moved to a valley in the mountains and it turned out to be the one self-same valley where I’d spent every spare moment of my twenties…
It began as it would go on. Long high walks, in secluded company.
Conversations that roamed far and deep, with joy and pain. And some quality laughter. The sense of possibility and confidence.
This is a place to bring people to. Let the mountains do their work. Give them room to reflect and recharge. Inspire them with mystery and adventure.
Take them right to the uncomfortable edge of safe, let them see what might live there.
Maybe create a fork in the road, where before there was none.
The Bucket Project is for people who don’t get time for themselves. It’s for people who carry the responsibility. It’s for people struggling to choose.
For a little while we absolve you of all responsibility, all decision making. You’ll have to surrender your caution and trust us to do right by you.
Let us surprise you, let us challenge you, maybe even treat you. Let us start you on an adventure whose end may not be certain.
Just be at the airport at 11am on Monday morning. Bring sensible shoes and a change of clothes, ready to start your adventure.
