hrCreating a Close Team Environment

It is not uncommon for members of business teams to work remotely from each other, as this age of technology has made it very simple to communicate via the Internet. Although virtual teams are simple and efficient, there are still aspects that these type of teams could fix to operate even better.

People work better in teams because each member offers unique perspectives, more tasks can be accomplished, and the presence of others motivates everyone to pull their fair share of work. A large consequence of working in virtual teams, however, is the limited bonding between the members. The absence of physical, face to face communication is oftentimes difficult in truly understanding a person’s personality. When people do not really know who they are working with, it is a challenge to feel a sense of belonging, which is the basis of teamwork.

Having some type of accountability system amongst the colleagues (additional to the supervisor) can help in making sure each member knows who is working on what. More often than not, taking interest in what other people are doing is something that will be reciprocated, thus making both parties’ feel their efforts are worthwhile.

Have an open line of communication available, not solely for business purposes. Some teams have a separate non-work chat that allows them to get to know each other in a more casual way. Because coworkers are not casually running into each other like they would in a traditional work office, it is easy to forget that other people in the team exist. Hosting video conference calls are not perfect, but are helpful in putting faces to names that are always seen on-screen.

Lastly, possibly the most effective way to foster a good team environment is to have everyone meet each other. This is not always the easiest thing to accomplish, especially if the people in your team are located on opposite ends of the globe. Encourage members who are close in proximity to meet on their own time. If your company has the means have everyone interact in real life, take advantage of it.
