How to Pitch Who You Are In 140 Characters Or Less

Entrepreneurs are able pitch their product or service to almost anyone in a matter of seconds. This is known as an elevator pitch, the age old method of sharing your idea with someone in about the time it takes to ride an elevator. But if someone asked you to give your personal elevator pitch could you do it?

Today, for instance, you will probably meet someone if you haven’t already. How will you introduce yourself? It could be a potential employer, a new classmate or maybe your date for the weekend. How are you going to convince them that what you’re saying is valuable and interesting?

To create your personal sales pitch, here’s the challenge — in the length of a tweet, or 140 characters, tell the story of who you are. But instead of tweeting your elevator pitch, make it your personal bio for your account.

Look at it like this — your bio is a cover letter, in a traditional sense. It is a short and sweet condensed version of your life story. When you have such a small place to write about yourself, it forces you to get a little creative and really think about who you are. This may sound difficult, but it will be testament to just how well you know yourself.

On a serious note, more and more recruiters and job professionals are turning to social media to dig deeper into the profiles of candidate. They want to know as much as possible before they make a decision to hire or interview you. Just like you should tweet and post things that reflect who you are and what you stand for , you should also have a killer bio to show off. Follow my guidelines below and you’ll be on your way to success.

THINK ABOUT WHAT MAKES YOU DIFFERENT

You hear this time and time again, but only because of how important it is. Just think — what do I absolutely want people to know about me? . Pick words that describe your individuality. You’re not born into this world to be someone else — you’re here to be you, which is exactly what you should tell people.

INCLUDE CURRENT AND PAST EXPERIENCE

Where have you worked? Have you lead a club? Do you have your own business? Include relevant professional experience you have as well a position or two you’ve held in the past. Don’t forget to @mention the company too. This will allow onlookers to quickly see what type of company you’ve been associated with.

LINK YOUR WEBSITE/BLOG

Your story doesn’t have to end with your bio. To give readers even more insight into what you do, add a link to your blogger, tumblr or personal website for people to visit. If you don’t have any of the above, make one! My personal favorite is about.me, a fun and personalized site to showcase your online presence, but a LinkedIn is also a safe bet.

HAVE FUN!

Who said a personal sales pitch shouldn’t be fun? Because it absolutely must be! This goes along with being memorable. People remember fun, not boring. And if you are remembered because of being boring, it’s not for a good reason. This is the perfect place to show you are in a non traditional.

To get you inspired, I’ve included some of my personal favorites. Check them out
