There’s nothing more frustrating than opening writing contest guidelines and seeing that you’re ineligible to enter just because you were born in Niagara Falls, Ontario rather than Niagara Falls, New York.

Being a Canadian writer can be uniquely challenging, in ways the international writing community can’t begin to imagine.

  • Many opportunities are limited to American authors.
  • Canadians are lumped in with Americans for international awards, or excluded by accident from calls for “American, UK, and EU writers.”
  • International calls for submissions are often highly competitive, lower-paying, and less prestigious than US-only ones.
  • Canadians are sometimes eligible to be published in American magazines — but not paid by them.
  • Sometimes, it isn’t obvious from the submission guidelines that a project is US-only until you’ve already spent time preparing your submission — or worse, until you’ve been accepted and then the editor is like, “Oh shoot, you’re not American? Sorry, but no thanks!”
