My Experience Staying Overnight in the Beck Mansion (Penetanguishene, Ontario)

What’s the first thought that comes to mind when you imagine spending the night in a haunted house or a place with reports of paranormal sightings? I’ve always been fascinated with infamous places and unusual history, whether it’s an abandoned tunnel, house, or ruins from an 1800s community. When I read about the Beck Mansion, also known as the Beck House, I became immediately intrigued and couldn’t wait to spend the night.

The Mansion’s History

The house was built in 1885 and became the home of Carl Beck, his wife, and their nine children. At that time, Beck was considered the wealthiest lumber magnate in the area, and he was also mayor of Penetanguishene, Ontario, between 1892 to 1895. When Carl Beck’s wife died, Mary, the oldest of the nine children, raised her younger siblings until her father passed away. He left his fortune to all the children, dividing the home and family assets evenly among them, but gave only one dollar to Mary. The reason for this unfair inheritance remains a mystery.

If you visit Penetanguishene, you’ll find a few items from home, and their previous owners, on display at the Centennial Museum. Today, the Beck Mansion…
