When the body of a young woman was discovered not far from her Oregon home, Laverne Pavlinac hatched a plot that she’d regret for the rest of her life. After gathering information on the crime, Laverne called the police department and named her boyfriend, John, as the murderer.

What followed was a series of bizarre events that saw the couple behind bars for a crime they didn’t commit, and the real killer roaming free.

A series of terrible events

On the 21st of January 1990, the body of 23-year-old Taunja Bennett was discovered in remote woodland near the Columbia Gorge, just outside of Portland, OR. Taunja had been beaten, raped, and strangled.

A couple of weeks later, Multnomah County police department took an anonymous call from a woman claiming to have overheard a man bragging in a bar. According to the caller, the man was 39-year-old John Sosnovske and had told people in the drinking-hole that he was Taunja’s killer.
