Hello there! Thank you for joining us again. This time we will be focusing on the founder behind Watch Skins, Collin Knock. Collin, could you please tell us more about how you got involved in the cryptocurrency space?
Initially, cryptocurrency was on my radar several years ago. At the time, my brother told me about it and it seemed strange to me. Bitcoin was something I’d heard about in its early stages, but struck me as a novelty at the time. I started looking closer in early 2017, and like everyone else it had my full attention six months later. That’s when I started to explore blockchain as a concept. About a year later, Watch Skins got its start.
Thanks for sharing. We know you started your first company back in 2003, could you tell us more about your journey with your first startup?
My first startup was a mortgage company formed in the early stages of the housing bubble. At the time I was 23, and at the peak of the business, we had over 75 employees. If you remember the market in those days, it was a very wild ride. People made and lost a lot of money. Looking back, it was an amazing experience, and I took some incredible lessons away from it all.
Great story Collin. We also know, that you founded Reverse Mortgage Lending, and grew it to one of the top 100 Reverse Mortgage Brokerages in America in 18 months. Could you tell us more about this briefly?
With Reverse Mortgage Lending, we came out of the gate strong. We knew exactly what we wanted to do with that company, and built it with a lot of experience going in. We paid attention to every detail, made a very clear plan and stuck to it. It’s been an incredible amount of work, but we’ve been very successful with that business, and it’s taught me a lot.
Thanks Collin. So let’s start talking about your new projects. In 2019 you created Watch Skins and Crypto Watches, could you give us a brief rundown of these two projects?
Watch Skins is the world’s first marketplace for blockchain authenticated collectible smartwatch faces. The marketplace will offer licensed smartwatch faces for many fashion and entertainment brands. Crypto Watches is our entirely virtual, blockchain authenticated fashion brand. As the first brand on the platform, Crypto Watches is a cutting edge fusion of fashion and technology, that also serves as a proof of concept for the project.
How did you come up with the idea for these projects, and why did you choose to incorporate cryptocurrency and blockchain technology?
It started when I had just gotten a new Apple watch. I was really excited about the new faces they had, but when I went to show my friend- he was wearing the exact same face as me! That started me down the path of building an app to create custom smartwatch faces.
Before Watch Skins, there was no real exclusivity in the market, and there were a lot of people ripping off brands. The eureka moment was realizing that we could use the blockchain to guarantee scarcity by issuing provable limited quantities, and we could prove authenticity as well. That meant we could give brands a massive new opportunity to sell licensed products.
We incorporated the blockchain because it is the perfect tool to facilitate digital collecting. Using blockchain to authenticate licenses was the icing on the cake, because of the huge new opportunity to bring authentic brands to smartwatches.
What’s your plan for the future? Both personally, and for the two projects, you are running?
My plan is to stay focused on growing this business into the largest digital collectible company ever. That means continuing to sharpen myself and offering whatever I can to the project. It also means helping to build the people in my sphere of influence, which in turn will continue building synergy and driving improvement.
That sounds like a great plan Collin. We also know that among your peers, you are known for your creative vision and your ability to manage large scale projects. How did you learn these skills, and how are you applying them to this project?
My ability to manage projects comes from creating good habits. I attribute my success to being relentless with my goals and my timelines. Timing is everything, and if I want to arrive at a particular milestone on a certain date, I know what steps to take in order to make that happen. Successful execution means doing that repeatedly, at a steady pace.
When it comes to learning these skills, everything has been hands on. Experience is a great teacher, and my skills improved as I learned about the value of taking ownership. Now ownership is something we’ve built into our culture, and we’ve been really selective with creating our team. One of our founding advisors spent 11 years as a Navy SEAL. I asked him to get involved in order to help us build a culture focused on excellence.
The SEALs are a perfect example that small and effective teams can make a big impact, and we’ve adopted a similar strategy in business. That mindset, coupled with the fact that we’re self-funded, has allowed us to rapidly make decisions and implement change without bureaucratic corporate timelines.
