After CoronaCoin (NCOV) made the headlines, two more cryptocurrencies have been founded that use the pandemic name. However, none of the three really inspires confidence.

Several dubious crypto projects use the current (at least media) ubiquitous coronavirus to draw attention to themselves. The most famous of these, CoronaCoin (NCOV), has already been the subject of articles by numerous established media such as Reuters, Nasdaq and the New York Times. The market data website CoinGecko also knows Coronavirus Token (CNV) and CORONA (CORONA).

CoronaCoin (NCOV): The meme cryptocurrency

The makers of NCOV appear to be deeply rooted in internet culture: CoronaCoin’s Twitter page (also known as CoronaToken) is full of memes with the famous frog Pepe and online jargon like “Frens” (instead of “Friends”). No wonder, the developers are said to have met on the 4chan imageboard.

The creators show their black humor through a mechanism called “Proof of Death”. A quantity of tokens is burned every 48 hours, based on the statistics of those who have died and died of the coronavirus. The ERC-20 token is therefore deflationary.

This macabre project also has a charitable side: 20 percent of the total amount of the token should be donated to the Red Cross. An initial donation of $235 was made this week.

What is the “true” Corona currency?

The makers of CORONA, on the other hand, appear to be less of a fun type and claim that they are the only true cryptocurrency for the pandemic. If that doesn’t remind you of Bitcoin SV (BSV) … The CORONA team explained on Twitter:

Disclaimer: We found at least 2 other crypto called CORONA. Please, remember that we are the REAL CORONA CRYPTO announced on january. Those others looks like all scam, they banned our team from theyr discord server.

According to the project website, the coins should be distributed free of charge via “infected addresses”. The aim of the whole should be to inform about diseases and to name the “real enemies”: “pharmaceutical companies, chemical laboratories, virus manufacturers and biological weapons”.

On the other hand, nothing more is known about coronavirus tokens (CNV) than that, like NCOV, it is an ERC-20 token. CoinGecko refers to Coronavirus.org, but this could be a mistake as the page lacks any reference to the token.

The dubious status of all three corona coins can be seen from the fact that they are only listed on CoinGecko, but not on the more well-known market data website CoinMarketCap.
