The castle that must have been built for Wes Anderson

Have you ever looked up the hashtag #accidentallywesanderson on Instagram? Well, I think I’ve found the origin of it. Or maybe even the origin of Wes Anderson’s style in general. It’s Schloss Benrath, a manor that seems to have been designed as a movie location.

It’s not. When it was designed, they couldn’t even imagine that someday we’ll be watching a movie. Let alone make tons of them on our phone. But that is what you do when you enter the premises of Schloss Benrath. Almost everything on the property is symmetrical and it is absolutely amazing and what we would define now as ‘really over the top’. And well, the fact that the buildings are painted in soft pink does help.

After a weekend to Dusseldorf — which I can recommend as well — we were driving back home. As huge fans of castles, Schlosses, manors, churches and other old buildings, we always check if there are any interesting buildings in the area. So when we noticed ‘Schloss Benrath’ on the road signs, we decided to follow them and we ended up at the Schloss. It was better than we could imagine.
