Nowadays, one of my side gigs is reading tarot for strangers, and I find the cards an amazing tool for emotional awareness and empowerment. But to be totally honest? After I bought my first deck back in high school, it took me almost ten years to find the learning strategies that helped me start feeling confident with the cards at all. With 78 cards in a conventional deck and endless possible interpretations, it can be overwhelming to figure out where to begin and how to make the meanings “stick.” So I’m here to spare you some frustration. Here are the game-changing habits I adopted in my 20s that helped me feel like I was finally getting a grip on the cards — and now I recommend them to anyone who asks me where to begin.

1. Draw a daily card — and study it *after the fact*

One of the most helpful things I ever started doing was to draw a card each day, look up its meanings and associations, and then reflect on how that card “showed up” in my day. For example, if I drew the 5 of Cups and had spent the whole day heartbroken, it was a very 5 of Cups day. However, my mistake (for a long time) was trying to do this in the morning.
