QB Postgame Fashion: The Good, The Bad, And The Disheveled

Cam Newton, Matt Stafford, Tom Brady, and Drew Brees at the podium.

NFL players don’t set the fashion tone that their NBA counterparts often do, but every once in a while, they make make statements in their own special way. Not surprisingly, it’s usually the quarterback, the franchise centerpiece, leading the charge. Yesterday’s postgame pressers lacked some of the juice we’ve seen in previous weeks and years, but there were some notable appearances.

Tom Brady

Mr. Bundchen, of course, sets the gold standard. There is no way he is ever going to rock anything less than some Gisele-approved Sunday best. For even when he’s not channeling Zoolander or swallowing cameras whole with his snooty ski cabin sweaters — and instead opts for super casual —Tom Brady still manages to pull it off. Which is to say, no matter he’s wearing, when Tom Terrific decides on a particular approach, he’s all in. And that’s an important element when it comes to postgame fashion, whether you’re dressed like Craig Sager, Dusty Bottoms, or Don Draper.

Oh, and as you probably noticed, Brady zipped up at some point during yesterday’s press conference after the Patriots beat the Raiders.

A fashion audible? Wow, I just said “fashion audible.” I have no choice now but to pole volt directly into a raging volcano.

Cam Newton

By now you’ve probably seen the takeaway from Cam Newton’s postgame presser last night — #buzz #trending #sizzle. Yup, it’s all about moving that needle … in loafers and capris. Which means that we have approximately 14 weeks left in the regular season for Vince Wilfork to wear this exact outfit. If the big fella manages to see the end zone — he already has one pick — I fully expect him to deliver an ensemble as spectacular as this one.

Personally, I prefer it when Cam and the Panthers are about winning football games and channeling the Nature Boy. This chant is just so wonderfully infectious:

Two claps and a Nature Boy, wooooooooooooooooo!

Matthew Stafford

I sort of understand what you and your publicist were going for here, Matthew. The attempt is spiffy but casual, care but don’t appear to care. Instead, however, we have three items — jacket, shirt, and pocket square — that should never be friends, and should perhaps challenge each other to a duel instead. And as for the intentionally-unintentionally messy hair (bonus commentary), it’s time to get some product, bud. Looks like mom tried to fix those locks moments before you stepped up to the podium.

Make no mistake: There’s upside here, but it’s going to take some time and a lot less trying.

Drew Brees

By all accounts, Drew Brees is a normal, nice dude; someone who is inexorably content in his own skin. And that’s what the NFL needs right now: more guys smiling and wearing polos. Yes, I actually just said that. Just don’t dare tuck that polo into khaki pants like a total dork, OK? That’s Peyton Manning’s job. And Jim Harbaugh’s.
