Mother’s Day was first known as “Mothering’s Day” in an early Christian festival. Back in Ancient Greeks and Romans, motherhood was celebrated by holding festivals in honor for mother goddesses Rhea and Cybele.

Mothering Sunday tradition became more of a non-religious holiday with children presenting flowers and appreciation. The holiday faded in popularity before joining with American Mother’s Day in the 1930s.

Anna Jarvis is known to be the founder of Mother’s Day, made in 1908 and became an official holiday in 1914. Anna has since disowned the holiday due to its commercialization. She wanted the day for children to honor their mothers, not to be profited off through buying cards or gifts.

Here are some ideas to honor your mother:

  • Flowers are the best way to show appreciation through their colorful appearance.
  • A homemade dessert is a great way to show effort as a gift.
  • Make an art craft that requires a creative mind.
  • Make a simple (or long!) yet sweet message to give to your mother!

Don’t forget to celebrate the mother figures in your life this Sunday!
