About a year ago, actress and influencer Dylan Mulvaney came out as a Transgender Woman. She has faced a lot of backlash and drama ever since coming out. Even though Dylan has received hate, she also has received millions of supporting fans. Even transgender celebrities such as Caitlyn Jenner have joined in on this backlash, which has put the internet in an uproar. This isn’t just an issue that happens online.

Everyday, transgender youth and even adults face discrimination. In researching statistics, websites like the Trevor Project have published surveys that unveil startling numbers. Even though they get support from many people, 37% of transgender and nonbinary youth reported that they have been physically threatened or harmed due to their gender identity. 71% of transgender and nonbinary youth have also reported that they have experienced discrimination based on their gender identity. School should be a safe place for all, but 17% percent of students reported their schools are not gender-affirming and then only 13% of students say school is a gender-affirming area. Home is supposed to be a place of rest and love. Your parents share unconditional love, however some parents do not. 16% of transgender youth report not having support from parents.

This may not affect you in everyday life, but it happens to people around you and within the world. You may not always see it but it is always there. There are many ways to take action such as volunteering, helping spread awareness, or even donating money to transgender awareness programs. It is time to end discrimination.
