August 10: Alan AJ wants you to share your thoughts on electric cars. Would you switch to driving one? Or if you already drive one, would you ever switch back to petrol/diesel?

Keeley and I sold our individual cars, both ten years old, and bought a brand spanking new car to share — yes, share. A car which costs next to nothing to drive around town — I fill up about once a month — and is great to drive on the highway.

We feel good that we are helping to save the planet, but I tell you, it’s like driving a computer, and like a computer, it has glitches from time to time. The gear-stick is a knob which turns anticlockwise for Reverse and clockwise to Drive. Park is in the middle of the two.

Sometimes, when I reverse out of my driveway onto the street, and I quickly turn the knob to Drive, it refuses to engage. I have to turn the car off and start all over again. Of course, this only happens when cars are waiting for me to get out of the way.

It’s not just me — it happens to Keeley as well. I must admit driving on the highway was a breeze. When on cruise control, the car can sense slower cars in front and automatically adjust its speed — pretty cool, I reckon. It can also warn me when cars are too close for me to change lanes. ( I have always hated changing lanes.)
