Remembrance Day, or Veterans’ Day as Americans call it isn’t just a day to celebrate one person for me. It’s not even a day to celebrate the thousands upon thousands of unknown people who bravely sacrificed their safety, security and often, their lives so I could enjoy what I have now.

It’s more complicated than that. So when Nancy Oglesby asks me to highlight one, sorry, but I can’t.

I just can’t. Here’s why. My family, my people, have been in every fight, war skirmish and battle since the American Revolution. Sometimes, we were invited. Sometimes, we weren’t wanted and had to petition our way in.

African Americans/Canadians, sometimes good enough for cannon fodder, sometimes ruled out as not worthy because white soldiers wouldn’t serve alongside us.

Think about that for a minute.

Think about begging to take up arms for a country that doesn’t see you as a citizen.
