I had three friends who all vied to be my “best friend”. One fell off the perch in 2012 after a four month trip in Europe. My sister and I did a lot of work planning the trip — we booked everything 12 months ahead! My friend not only annoyed the hell outta me, but everyone else in out tour group of six. She never stopped complaining! We all decided to pay to fly her home from Rome early, but instead Keeley could stand the tension no more and flew home from Rome. I know that’s Keeley’s biggest regret as she missed out on the best two months of the trip even though she’d paid up front for all of the accommodation.
We haven’t spoken since then. Well that’s a lie. I ran into her at the shops one day and after a brief chat asked her to call in for a cuppa when she was on her way home from work one afternoon. She had to drive right past my house! She never did call in.
The next one to fly the coop hurt me more than I thought possible. I had been her rock during her escape from her abusive husband, I stayed with her when she was single when I was working down the coast, we were great drinking buddies and bad influences on one another. Our friendship survived until 2019 even though she had moved away to live with her…
