Learning About Breast Cancer
It’s breast cancer awareness month & time to support those who are afflicted with this disease
When I first began making jewellery, I created some pieces with white glass beads and pink ribbons. Some of the proceeds from those sales, I sent to the Susan G. Komen Foundation as a donation.
Today, anything pink still sells. The color has become synonymous with breast cancer support. I have pieces of handcrafted jewelry at a gallery in Iowa, and they tell me that anything pink still sells really well.
Fortunately, I’ve never had to deal with breast cancer. But my sister had it. With permission, I’m sharing a little about her case here. And several distantly removed relatives have had it or have it now for the second time in their lives. None of my close friends has been diagnosed. This is probably rare.
My sister’s diagnosis, although scary for sure, was caught at a stage zero. She worked in the field of oncology (but with liquid tumors such as leukemia and lymphoma) and was both well-versed and well-connected at the cancer hospital where she was employed. I know she felt the diagnosis helped her be more empathetic with the people she saw as patients.
