June 9: Karen Hoffman asks, “What’s your favourite mode of transportation?”

The short answer is, “It depends.”

It’s tempting to pick a fun mode of transportation, such as the cable car at Llandudno.

In the 1970s, I remember leaning out of the window and making it swing, which scared my parents.

Now that I’m older, I can understand how they felt. I still like it, but I sometimes feel uneasy and scared when thinking about how I’m suspended in the air, and how old it is. And I remain seated!

Still, I can’t exactly use it for weekly grocery shopping, so I’d better think of something else.

During warm weather, cycling is appealing — as long as I’m not going far and don’t need to carry much.

Unfortunately, here in England, my town has narrow roads and busy junctions, so cycling feels unsafe.

Although there are plenty of cycle lanes, they do not join up. That means riding next to cars, buses, and lorries.
