A Superstar at the Superbar: An Ode to the Wendy’s $2.99 Buffet!

There are certain places that define everyone’s childhood, and for me, a huge one was Wendy’s Superbar. Nothing was as promising or exotic to a 12-year-old in Delco as the $2.99 buffet at Wendy’s. The buffet had it all- spaghetti! Garlic bread! Nachos! Tacos! Salad! Ambrosia, which is just fruit and marshmallows and most kids wouldn’t eat it but DAMNED if 12-year-old me was skipping anything in this buffet- I knew the value of a dollar.

Every day after school the neighborhood kids and I would scrounge up three dollars and begin the epic one block journey through the Pep Boys parking lot to the place that held some our fondest after-school memories! If we couldn’t find $3 in our Starter jacket or elastic-waist sweatpants pockets, NO PROBLEM- we could usually find it on the ground in the many parking lots that surrounded that specific Wendy’s.

We decided to make a friendly competition out of who could eat the most plates because us Delco kids didn’t mess around AND made most things a competition! Not trying to brag but I would clock in around 14–15 PPV (Plates Per Visit) every time, which breaks down to about 19 cents a plate- I really wanted to stretch those bills long before the Forman Mills was erected in the adjacent parking lot.
