“My Year in Tights”
Andrew Marsden presents the first “Shrieval Reflections” — Sept 2024
A new tradition is being started. Ten years since Christopher Seow established “Reflections of the Lord Mayor”* he asked Andrew Marsden MStJ to do the same following his 2022/23 Shrieval year.
Given that non-Aldermanic* Sheriffs are not entitled to stand as Lord Mayor this gives the opportunity to hear from an individual who has been a leader of the City of London* for a year but will never do a “Reflections of the Lord Mayor” session.
Many people followed Andrew’s year via a wonderful set of LinkedIn updates.
The in-person “Shrieval Reflections” event in the exquisite St Lawrence, Jewry was just as fun and informative.
Topics ranged from the denier of tights, Andrew’s moving account of his visit to Ukraine, the highs and lows of living at the Old Bailey* grace-and-favour flat (a cross between a two-start hotel and a student flat), the ceremony of state visits and functions, and a sword fight with fellow Sheriff Alastair King* on the stairs of the Old Bailey Grand Hall. And of course the joy of marrying his very own Maid Marian whilst being a Sherrif — the first time in 900 years!
The formal welcome was given by Sir Charles Bowman. Closing remarks were made by Sir David…
