A place for business

If you’ve set your sights on a career in business then look no further than City.

Boasting a student business incubation space with the highest amount of social enterprises created and third for graduate start-ups still active after three years in London, City is the ideal place to start a business.

Liz Nguyen and Joseph Tam (MSc, Marketing Strategy & Innovation, 2016)

Two years after leaving the Launch Lab, Liz Nguyen and Joseph Tam (MSc, Marketing Strategy & Innovation, 2016), secured a two-and-a-half-year space at Shoreditch Boxpark.

Liz, one half of the Korean-Vietnamese vegan food hybrid said: “We learnt a lot in the Launch Lab and winning CitySpark was very helpful as we developed skills in pitching concisely.

“This is one of the most important skills to have as when we meet customers we are able to capture them in the first moment.”

A place for creativity

Ziki Nelson, (MA Creative Writing, 2015)

Businesses come in all shapes and sizes, so if your dreams include more of a creative flavour, then City is key.

Now selling 4,000 comic anthologies per year and with an estimated readership of 2,500 people across 20 different countries, Ziki Nelson, (MA Creative Writing, 2015), created a platform for African writers to tell African stories.

Ziki said: “I don’t think we would be where we are now without the support that I have had from the City enterprise team because that helped me evolve much more quickly as an entrepreneur and in refining my business concept. The mentorship gave me an environment where I could flourish.”

A place for change

Committed to the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and titled the ‘Greenest University in London,’ City is the perfect place for students to make a difference both environmentally and socially.

Having already scooped a £10,000 Huawei price, Umadevi Dassaye (BSc, Actuarial Science 2019), and her business Shellpod Shampoo aims to reduce plastic consumption with single-use shampoo balls that dissolve in water and require no packaging.

After meeting her business partners at City, Umadevi said: “The team I met at the City Starters Weekend are all still with me now and although we all come from different backgrounds we all have the same passion and drive to achieve the best for the business.

“Being a member of the Launch Lab has been amazing. They find us mentors who challenge us and offer a space where we can refine our businesses alongside our studies. We are surrounded by other start-ups and help each other — there is a real sense of community in the Launch Lab.”
