Your graduation celebration may look a little different this year but that doesn’t mean it can’t be just as memorable! To help you prepare for your upcoming online event, we’ve put together some top tips to ensure you’re fully set for the big day…

  1. Share your memories and get social.

Dig out those old photos and start sharing your favourite memories of your time at City using the #CityClassof2021 hashtag on Twitter and Instagram. We will be re-sharing these from the official City social channels and on our website for you all to reminisce. We’ve also created some Instagram filters and stickers to help you feel like you’re there. Type in ‘City, University of London’ on Instagram Stories to add the stickers to your photos and click on our ‘filters’ tab to use the backdrops.

P.S — Don’t forget to tag us in any photos you take with them so we can reshare!

2. Bring the event to you.

We know you may not be able to completely transform your room into the iconic Barbican Centre auditorium, but there’s no reason why you can’t decorate with banners, balloons and other graduation decor. Check out this website for inspiration. Create a backdrop for your video set-up, get creative and make a Mortar Board at home — compete with your friends to see who can create the best one! (Just think of the photo ops!)

3. Triple check your settings and equipment.

We’ve all been there. You successfully log in to your online chat, spend a couple of minutes talking and then it hits you… you’ve been on mute the whole time.

Make sure you’ve given your equipment a thorough check and your devices are fully charged before logging in to your celebration. That way you’ll have more time to enjoy the celebrations, than fixing your audio/ video.

4. Dress up!

…or down, completely up to you! The best thing about online celebrations is that you only really need to make an effort from the waist up.

If you do fancy wearing the full graduation attire, our gowning company are offering a ‘direct to home delivery’ available to all students wanting academic dress for virtual celebrations. Find out more here.

5. Indulge.

If you can’t eat your favourite food and celebrate with bubbles during your graduation celebration, then when can you? Order a takeaway, bake a cake, stock up on your favourite beverages… treat yourself! It’s your special day and you certainly deserve it.

6. Connect, connect, connect!

Stay in touch and sign up to the Alumni network. The network offers free and lifelong membership to all former students and staff of City. We’d love to hear what you’re up to and we send our alumni regular newsletters with news and events. Don’t forget to keep in touch with your coursemates via LinkedIn to build up your professional connections. You never know what the future holds!

This is only a temporary celebration and the University remains committed to offering an in-person celebration when it is safer to do so.

Happy celebrations and congratulations!
