At The Civic Beat, we watch the global web for trends, moments and words about social and political issues emerging in creative ways. Continuing this work, we’re starting a new series, Add Oil Comics, that illustrates the social web.

Comic artist Jason Li introduces the series with illustrations quoting recent Tweets by Kenyatta Cheese. A knowledge worker by day, Cheese posted in response to recent nightly protests across the United States for racial justice in the face of police violence. In two recent, separate cases in New York City and Ferguson, Missouri, grand jury decisions not to indict white officers who killed black men sparked the wave of recent protests.

*A recent protest slogan and hashtag meme, “I Can’t Breathe” references the last words of Eric Garner, who died in a chokehold by a police officer.
